Redo Sternotomy and Bentall's Operation

This video shows the case of a patient in Ghana who underwent a redo sternotomy and then a Bentall's operation for a dilated aortic root with severe regurgitation.

The patient was thought to have only aortic regurgitation four years prior, when only a transthoracic echocardiogram was available to surgeons. Upon opening the chest in this case, an enlarged aorta was seen, and the surgeon made the decision not to proceed, as the team did not have any aortic conduit available at that time. Ignoring the dilated aorta would not have been the correct operation, so the surgical team made the plan to bring some conduit over and complete the operation when they were next in Ghana.

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the subsequent mission for four years but the patient was eventually able to undergo a redo sternotomy and a Bentall’s operation with the conduit.
