Atrial Septal Defect Repair Through Right Axillary Minithoracotomy

This video presents the clinical case of atrial septal defect repair through right axillary minithoracotomy.

The patient was a seven-year old girl with no symptoms. The physical examination was uneventful. An echocardiogram showed secondary ASD with diameter 10-15 mm and left to right shunt. pulmonary-to-systemic flow ratio (Qp/Qs) was 3. Left ventricular function was preserved.

The operation plan consisted of right axillary minithoracotomy with central cannulation for CPB, induced artificial ventricular fibrillation, right atrium incision, and ASD patch repair.

The patient’s postoperative course was unremarkable. The postoperative echocardiogram demonstrated no residual ASD. The patient was extubated after two hours, the chest tubes were removed after sixteen hours, and the patient was discharged home on postoperative day two.
