360-Degree Virtual Reality Rendering of COVID-19 Infected Lungs
A 59-year-old man presented to a local hospital with fever, nonproductive cough, and dyspnea. He tested positive for COVID-19. Prior to his progressive respiratory failure, computed tomography of the chest was performed. After reaching maximum ventilator support, he was transferred to the authors’ institution for ECMO. Using software from Surgical Theater, a 360-degree virtual reality rendering of his chest was made from the CT scan to better visualize the extent of COVID-19 inflicted damage to the lungs. In this video, COVID-infected lung are represented in yellow. This video has been used in a public campaign to highlight the extent of lung damage from the virus and to enforce the need for continued social distancing.
